Elementary School Introduction to the School Environment (MPLS)

Creating a Fun and Meaningful Start

Introduction

The Elementary School Introduction to the School Environment (MPLS) is an activity at the beginning of a new school year designed to welcome new students. At the elementary school level, MPLS plays a crucial role as it serves as children's first introduction to the world of formal schooling. The transition from home or kindergarten to elementary school is often challenging for children. Therefore, MPLS at the elementary school level must be designed with a fun, educational, and empathetic approach.

Aims of MPLS at the Elementary School Level

The primary goal of MPLS is to help new students adjust to the school environment, culture, and learning system. Some specific objectives of implementing MPLS at the elementary school level include:

1. Introducing the School Environment

Children are introduced to the classroom, library, restrooms, teachers' lounge, field, and other areas of the school. This is crucial for fostering a sense of security and comfort in activities within the school environment.

2. Fostering Self-Confidence and Independence

MPLS greatly helps students understand themselves, develop self-confidence, and begin to learn to perform simple activities independently, such as bringing their own supplies, tidying up, and obeying school rules.

3. Introducing the School Community

Students are introduced to their class teacher, principal, school staff, and classmates to create a pleasant social atmosphere.

4. Instilling Character Values

MPLS is an effort from the beginning to introduce students to positive values such as discipline, responsibility, cooperation, and courtesy, in accordance with the spirit of the Pancasila Student Profile.

Principles of MPLS Implementation in Elementary Schools

Children's characteristics are very diverse in the early stages of development, therefore MPLS must be designed with the following principles:

• Enjoyable and Non-Burdensome

Activities should be light, entertaining, and age-appropriate. Pressure, intimidation, or excessive physical activity are not permitted.

• Play-Based Education

Educational games are very effective in conveying values and information to new students.

• Participatory and Inclusive

All students are given the opportunity to participate without discrimination. Children with special needs must also receive appropriate attention and treatment.

• Prioritize Safety and Health

MPLS activities must consider the physical and psychological safety of students. In this context, teacher support is crucial.

Examples of Elementary School MPLS Activities

Elementary school MPLS activities typically take place during the first 3–5 days of the school year. Here are some examples of activities that can be conducted:

1. Welcome and Introduction Ceremony

The MPLS begins with a simple ceremony or welcome from the principal and teachers. Children are introduced to the school's name, vision, and mission, and basic school regulations.

2. School Tour

Children are taken on a tour of the school facilities. Teachers explain the function of each room interactively.

3. Icebreakers and Educational Games

Activities such as singing together, playing guessing games, and forming an introduction circle can lighten the mood and build closeness among students.

4. Creative Activities

Drawing, coloring, making collages, or simple crafts are ways to introduce students to the learning process in a fun way.

5. Introduction to School Rules

The school rules are conveyed in engaging ways, such as mini-dramas, hand puppets, or animated videos. This makes it easier for children to understand the school rules. 6. Learning School Culture

Introducing positive school culture, such as greeting teachers, maintaining cleanliness, queuing, and helping each other.

7. Introducing Teachers and Classmates

Through the name game or "Who am I" activity, students more easily remember the names of their teachers and classmates.

The Role of Teachers and Parents in MPLS

The success of MPLS depends not only on the activity design, but also on the collaboration between teachers and parents:

• The Role of Teachers

Teachers are the main figures who guide MPLS activities. As teachers, they must be friendly, patient, and communicative. A personal approach to each student is very helpful in reducing anxiety in new students.

• The Role of Parents

Parents need to prepare their children emotionally before MPLS begins. In addition, providing sufficient supplies, ensuring the readiness of school supplies, and encouraging children to socialize are also very important.

Challenges in Implementing MPLS

Some challenges that often arise in MPLS at the elementary school level include:

• Children Crying or Reluctant to Be Separated from Parents

This is very common. Teachers need to create a calming atmosphere with a gentle and creative approach.

• Children's Different Backgrounds

Children come from diverse backgrounds, including those who have never attended kindergarten. Therefore, an individual approach is essential.

• Limited School Resources

Not all schools have complete facilities to support the MPLS (Learning and Learning Model). Therefore, teacher creativity is key.

The MPLS at the elementary school level is the most important and crucial beginning in a child's early educational journey. The implementation of the MPLS, which must be well-designed, effective, efficient, and child-friendly, can help students feel safe, accepted, and ready to embark on the learning process in elementary school. More than just an introduction, the MPLS is the foundation that will shape children's initial perceptions of school.

It is hoped that with a fun, collaborative, and educational approach, the MPLS will become a positive memory that will remain with students throughout their lives. Therefore, teachers, schools, and parents must work together to ensure that this introduction period truly provides new meaning and enthusiasm for Indonesian children.
